Minimally Invasive Direct Anterior Total Hip Arthroplasty

Dr. Thielen trained extensively with minimally invasive muscle sparing anterior approach total hip arthroplasty at the Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, California. During his fellowship training he performed hundreds of anterior total hip replacements. He brought these surgical techniques to Maui where he is the first surgeon to perform a direct anterior total hip arthroplasty at Maui Memorial Medical Center in 2018. He also helped to pioneer the same day discharge program for total hip replacement surgery here on Maui. Benefits of the direct anterior approach to total hip replacement include quicker recovery, lower risk of hip dislocation, and easy use of xray during the surgery allowing for more precise placement of the implant. Same day Discharge (Outpatient) Total Knee Arthroplasty

Dr. Thielen helped create the same day discharge clinical pathway at Maui Memorial Medical Center in 2020. In 2021, Dr. Thielen became the first surgeon on Maui to perform total knee replacement surgery in a free standing ambulatory surgery center. We are now happy to offer total knee replacement surgery, for most patients, to be performed at Aloha Surgery Center. With modern surgical and pain management techniques, most patients are able to return home on the same day of their surgery and sleep in the comfort of their own bed. Patients have had a tremendously positive experience with this program and have been happy to not have to get on a plane to travel for their procedure or office visits.
